Tragic Accident Claims the Life of Shelby Hohn and Injures Tessa

A devastating motor vehicle accident on Wednesday, June 5th, 2024, has resulted in the death of Shelby Hohn and left Tessa, Sutton’s girlfriend, with serious injuries. The accident occurred in the Parkston area, profoundly affecting the local community.

The victims of this tragic accident have been identified as Shelby Hohn of Dimock, South Dakota, and Tessa. Shelby, a beloved member of the community, passed away from her injuries. Tessa sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical care.

On the evening of June 5th, Shelby and Tessa were traveling in their vehicle when they were rear-ended, causing them to be thrown into oncoming traffic where they collided with a semi-truck. Both individuals were critically injured and immediately transported to local hospitals for treatment. Shelby was taken to Avera McKennan Hospital, while Tessa was transported to Queen of Peace Hospital with a broken shoulder and a bruised lung. Further scans will be conducted once the swelling reduces to check for any additional injuries.

Shelby underwent two critical operations to address her severe head injury, which had caused significant brain swelling. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, including a procedure to remove part of her skull to relieve the swelling and a second operation with a vascular surgeon, Shelby Hohn succumbed to her injuries. She was pronounced dead on the night of June 5th.

Shelby Hohn was known for her infectious smile and her ability to make people laugh. She was a true country girl with a unique and humorous personality, loved by all who knew her. Friends described her as always ready for a laugh and unafraid to show her true self. Her passing is a tremendous loss to the community.

Tessa’s Condition

Tessa remains in serious condition at Queen of Peace Hospital. She has a broken shoulder and a bruised lung, and further medical assessments will be conducted to determine if there are any additional injuries once the swelling subsides. The community is hopeful for her recovery.

The accident has deeply affected the small community of Parkston, South Dakota, a city in Hutchinson County with a population of 1,567 as of the 2020 census. The current mayor, Adam Doering, along with other community members, has expressed their condolences and support for the families affected by this tragedy.
