      St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Pastors Carol Mart and Charles Layton Killed in Highway 13 Collision

      The Linn County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that two individuals who died in a tragic collision on Highway 13 on Sunday were both pastors from St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. The fatal accident occurred at the intersection of Blaine’s Crossing Road and Highway 13 at approximately 1 p.m.

      According to the preliminary investigation, a Chevrolet Cruze was traveling westbound on Blaine’s Crossing Road when it failed to yield while entering Highway 13. This failure to yield resulted in a collision with a northbound Nissan Rogue. The impact caused both vehicles to come to a stop in the center median of the highway.

      The victims have been identified as 77-year-old Carol Mart and 65-year-old Charles Layton, both residents of Cedar Rapids. They were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Nissan Rogue, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, escaped unharmed.

      St. Paul’s United Methodist Church confirmed that both Mart and Layton were pastors at the church and were on their way to lunch following a worship service when the accident occurred. The church community is deeply mourning their loss, as they were beloved figures known for their dedication and service.

      “Carol and Charles were pillars of our church community,” said a spokesperson for St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. “Their leadership, compassion, and commitment to our congregation and the broader community will be profoundly missed.
