Lewis & Clark County Sheriff/Coroner Leo Dutton has identified the pilot who tragically died in a plane crash on Wednesday while combating the Horse Gulch Fire northeast of Helena as Juliana Turchetti. The 45-year-old pilot lost her life when her plane crashed into a mountainside and subsequently landed in Hauser Lake. Turchetti was the sole occupant of the aircraft at the time of the crash.

The plane, contracted by the U.S. Forest Service, was actively engaged in firefighting efforts, scooping water to help control the blaze. Turchetti was employed by Dauntless Air, a firefighting company based in Idaho, and was highly regarded for her skills and dedication.

Originally from Brazil, Juliana Turchetti was one of the pioneering female agriculture pilots in her home country, as noted by the agriculture aviation magazine AgAir Update. She was in the United States on a visa and leaves behind a 17-year-old son and numerous family members in Brazil who mourn her loss deeply.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte and Idaho Governor Brad Little acknowledged the significant contribution of Turchetti’s work. They confirmed that the plane was on loan from Idaho to the U.S. Forest Service to assist with the Horse Gulch Fire. Both governors expressed their condolences and admiration for Turchetti’s bravery, stating, “Our first responders and wildland firefighters put their lives on the line to quickly respond to threats and protect our communities. It’s a true act of bravery to run toward a fire. We join all Montanans and Idahoans in praying for the fallen hero’s family and friends during this tragic time.”

This tragic incident underscores the dangers faced by those who fight wildfires, often putting their own lives at risk to protect others. The loss of Juliana Turchetti is a somber reminder of the sacrifices made by firefighters and first responders, and her dedication and courage will be remembered by all who knew her and those who benefited from her service.
