Mercer County Authorities Investigate Fatal Shooting and Vehicle Collision in Trenton

Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri has announced an ongoing investigation involving the Mercer County Homicide Task Force (MCHTF), the Mercer County Serious Collision Response Team (SCRT), and the Trenton Police Department. The investigation focuses on a shooting incident and subsequent motor vehicle collision that resulted in the death of Johny Emmanuel Cruz-Rodriguez.

The tragic events unfolded on the night of July 12, 2024, at approximately 10:20 p.m. when Trenton communications received multiple reports of an accident involving an overturned vehicle at the intersection of Garfield and Farragut Avenues. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find a white Durango flipped over, with Cruz-Rodriguez inside, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention, Cruz-Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene at around 10:39 p.m.

In addition to Cruz-Rodriguez, two young children were found inside the vehicle, secured in car seats and unharmed. Witnesses reported that Cruz-Rodriguez was near the rear of the Durango when an unknown individual entered the vehicle and attempted to drive away. As Cruz-Rodriguez tried to intervene, shots were fired, leading to the vehicle overturning a short distance away.

The investigation into the incident is still in progress, with authorities working to piece together the exact sequence of events and identify the suspect involved. The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office is urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
