      Ulises Martinez Arrested in Connection with Hit-and-Run Death of Nashville Business Owner Matt Carney

      NASHVILLE, TN — Ulises Martinez, the suspect in the hit-and-run death of beloved Nashville business owner Matt Carney, was apprehended on Thursday, July 18, following an extensive search effort that spanned several weeks. Martinez was located and arrested at the Somatel Motel on Metroplex Drive near Interstate 24 and Harding Place.

      The tragic incident occurred on June 19 in the parking lot of Carney’s restaurant, Smokin Thighs. Carney, 42, suffered severe head trauma after being struck by a vehicle. Despite receiving medical care, Carney succumbed to his injuries on July 4 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, as reported by the Metro Nashville Police Department.

      The investigation into the hit-and-run quickly led authorities to the suspect vehicle, a spray-painted Nissan Frontier with a temporary tag, which was discovered in the parking lot of the LaQuinta Inn on Sidco Drive on June 29. This vehicle was linked to the June 19 theft of a pickup truck from a church on Franklin Pike. Following this discovery, an arrest warrant was issued for 24-year-old Ulises Martinez.

      Efforts to locate Martinez intensified after a significant break in the case on July 10. MNPD’s Specialized Investigations Division spotted Martinez outside a motel on Bell Road. Although a pursuit ensued, which resulted in the arrests of Francisco Martinez-Lopez, 25, and Adrian Diaz, 31, Martinez managed to evade capture at that time.

      The search for Martinez escalated on July 17, with the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s Chattanooga division leading the effort. Over 70 local, state, and federal officers were involved in the manhunt, demonstrating the high priority and seriousness of the case.

      Finally, on July 18, Martinez was apprehended at the Somatel Motel. This arrest brings some relief to the community and the family of Matt Carney, who have been seeking justice for his untimely death. The Metro Nashville Police Department has confirmed that investigations concerning Martinez’s involvement in Carney’s death are ongoing.
