      Horse Racing Community Mourns Sudden Death of Paul Darling KC OBE, HBLB Chairman

      The horse racing and betting community is mourning the tragic and unexpected death of Paul Darling KC OBE, Chairman of the Horse Race Betting Levy Board (HBLB). Paul Darling passed away unexpectedly this weekend, leaving a profound impact on the industry he served diligently.

      Paul Darling OBE KC was reappointed as HBLB’s Chairman by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport. His reappointment, alongside Anne Lambert as a Government Appointed Member, underscored his significant contributions to the board and the broader horse racing community.

      Paul Darling had been Chairman of the Horserace Betting Levy Board since April 1, 2020. A distinguished King’s Counsel, he practiced commercial and construction law at 39 Essex Chambers in London. His extensive experience in the field included various official posts, such as serving on the Tote board before its privatization from 2006 to 2008, and as a government-appointed member of the HBLB from 2008 to 2014. His leadership extended to other significant roles, including Chairman of the Sports Grounds Safety Authority from 2009 to 2015 and Chairman of the Association of British Bookmakers.

      The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (TBA) expressed deep sorrow at his passing. Philip Newton, Chairman of the TBA, stated, “All of us at the TBA are shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Paul Darling KC OBE, Chairman of the Horse Race Betting Levy Board. Paul was a constant and consistent voice of reason for the industry, and his wise counsel will not be easily replaced.”

      Philip Newton highlighted Paul Darling’s invaluable contributions, particularly his encouragement and support of the Great British Bonus. “Paul was a friend, a fan, and an asset to British Horse Racing, and he will be much missed. Our thoughts are with his wife Camilla, his family, friends, and colleagues at this very sad time,” Newton added.

      Paul Darling’s leadership and dedication were pivotal in shaping policies and initiatives that benefited the horse racing and betting industries. His sudden loss is a significant blow to the community that relied on his expertise and vision. His legacy will endure through the initiatives he supported and the countless individuals he inspired throughout his career.
