Pedestrian Killed, Two Officers Injured in Crash on I-485 Ramp in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A tragic accident on Thursday morning claimed the life of 29-year-old Brian Battle and left two police officers injured on the I-485 ramp at Mt. Holly Road. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. while Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers were investigating a reported stolen vehicle on the shoulder of the ramp. As officers were conducting the investigation, a motorhome driven by Robert Ewrin Reiser struck two police vehicles, sending one of them into an embankment.

The collision had devastating consequences. Brian Battle, who had been reporting the stolen vehicle, was fatally injured in the crash. Despite being transported to a nearby hospital, Battle did not survive his injuries. CMPD reported that one of the officers, who was pinned inside their vehicle, was also taken to the hospital but did not sustain life-threatening injuries. A second officer involved in the crash was also transported with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Robert Ewrin Reiser, the driver of the motorhome, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. At this time, no formal charges have been filed, but the investigation remains active and ongoing. The CMPD Major Crash Unit is handling the investigation as they work to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.

The I-485 ramp remains closed as authorities continue their work at the scene. Motorists in the area are advised to seek alternative routes as the closure is expected to cause significant traffic delays.
