SIOUX FALLS, SD — A tragic shooting at Dunham Park on Sunday afternoon left 29-year-old Joshua Allen dead and three others injured. The Sioux Falls Police Department is investigating the incident, which marks the city’s sixth homicide of the year. Police were called to the scene at around 4:30 p.m. after gunshots erupted in a large gathering at the park located in the 1300 block of South Marion Road.

Upon arriving, officers discovered Allen had been fatally shot. Additionally, a 27-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to his legs and torso, a 40-year-old man was shot in the face, and a 26-year-old man was shot in the shoulder. The three surviving victims were rushed to a local hospital, where the 27-year-old and 40-year-old remain in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, according to police spokesman Sam Clemens.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear. Multiple shell casings from different calibers were found at the scene, suggesting that more than one firearm was involved. As of Monday morning, no arrests had been made, and police are still working to identify the suspects and determine the motive behind the gathering and the subsequent shooting.

Dunham Park was closed on Monday as the investigation continued. Officers and police vehicles were observed at the park throughout the day as detectives combed the area for evidence. Police Chief Jon Thum urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward, stressing that “people know exactly what happened” during the shooting. Thum encouraged witnesses to contact the police or submit tips anonymously through CrimeStoppers.

The investigation has also extended to Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center, which went into lockdown shortly after the shooting. Although police did not directly connect the shooting to the hospital lockdown, Clemens noted that the decision to restrict access is made solely by hospital officials. In a statement, Cale Feller, Director of Media Relations & Corporate Communications, emphasized that the hospital’s priority remains the safety of employees, patients, and their families.

As Sioux Falls reels from the violence, police continue to work diligently to bring those responsible to justice. The community is urged to provide any information that might assist in solving the case and bringing closure to the victims and their families.
