Mermentau Bicyclist Killed in Collision with Pickup Truck on U.S. 90 in Jeff Davis Parish

JEFF DAVIS PARISH, La. — A tragic accident on U.S. 90 in Jeff Davis Parish claimed the life of 49-year-old bicyclist Shawn Maris on Sunday evening. The crash occurred around 9 p.m. near Triangle Shell Road when Maris, who was cycling eastbound, was struck by a GMC Sierra pickup truck, according to Louisiana State Police Troop D.

Authorities report that Maris made a sudden left turn directly into the path of the pickup, which was also traveling east. The driver of the truck was unable to avoid the collision, resulting in Maris being thrown from his bicycle. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Trooper Matt Gaspard, the spokesperson for Troop D, highlighted several safety concerns that likely contributed to the fatal crash. Maris was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, and his bicycle was not equipped with lights or reflectors, which are essential for visibility during night riding. The absence of these safety measures made it difficult for the driver to see Maris in time to avoid the collision.

The driver of the GMC Sierra, who was wearing a seatbelt, was unharmed in the crash. As is standard in such cases, both the driver and Maris were subjected to toxicology tests to determine if impairment played a role in the accident. The results are pending, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Louisiana State Police continue to stress the importance of safety measures for cyclists, particularly during night rides. Troopers emphasize that wearing an approved helmet significantly increases a rider’s chances of surviving a crash. They also advise cyclists to use lights and reflectors to enhance visibility, which can help prevent similar tragedies.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the need for both cyclists and drivers to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. As authorities work to piece together the details of what happened, they are urging all road users to take extra precautions, especially when sharing the road at night.

The investigation into the crash is still active, and more information will be released as authorities continue to gather evidence and analyze the circumstances surrounding the collision.
