Sheena Fitzgerald, Driver of Dodge Challenger killed in multi-vehicle crash on Route 28

PITTSBURGH, PA — A fatal multi-vehicle crash occurred early Monday morning on Route 28, resulting in the death of one individual. The accident unfolded shortly after 7 a.m. and involved a total of four vehicles, including a Dodge Challenger, a Dodge Dart, a Ford F-350, and a Hyundai Kona.

The crash began when Sheena Fitzgerald, 34, was driving a Dodge Challenger southbound on Route 28. According to the Pennsylvania State Police, Fitzgerald was speeding and attempted to overtake a Ford F-350. In the process, she struck the rear bumper of the F-350, causing her to lose control of the Challenger. The vehicle veered off the road, crossed into the center median, and continued across it, heading into the northbound lanes.

Upon entering the northbound lanes, Fitzgerald’s Dodge Challenger struck a guardrail, which propelled the vehicle into the air. The Challenger then collided with the hood and windshield of a Dodge Dart traveling northbound. The impact caused the Challenger to continue its trajectory and subsequently be hit by a Hyundai Kona driven by Jonathan Sands, who was also traveling northbound.

Fitzgerald was pronounced dead at the scene due to the extensive injuries sustained in the crash. Emergency services and state police responded swiftly, working to manage the situation and assist those involved. Jonathan Sands, the driver of the Hyundai Kona, was seriously injured and transported to Allegheny General Hospital. Despite his serious condition, Sands is currently reported to be in stable condition.

The drivers of the Dodge Dart and Ford F-350 emerged unscathed from the collision. The Pennsylvania State Police are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings suggest that speeding played a significant role in the crash, but further investigation is needed to confirm all contributing factors.

Emergency crews successfully cleared the scene by approximately 11:30 a.m., and the roadway was reopened to traffic.
