San Diego Police Officer Dies, Partner Critically Injured in Fiery High-Speed Chase Collision

San Diego, CA – A San Diego police officer was tragically killed, and his partner critically injured during a high-speed chase late Monday night. The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) has released the names of those involved: Officer Austin Machitar, who lost his life, and Officer Zach Martinez, who is in critical condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital.

The deadly incident unfolded around 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Doliva Drive. SDPD Chief Scott Wahl reported that the pursuit began when officers attempted to stop a speeding vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, however, refused to pull over and continued to flee, prompting a high-speed chase.

Machitar and Martinez were responding to assist with the chase when their vehicle was struck by the fleeing car at the intersection. The impact resulted in a fiery crash, with both officers’ vehicle and the fleeing car engulfed in flames. Tragically, Officer Austin Machitar was pronounced dead at the scene. His partner, Officer Zach Martinez, sustained severe injuries and remains hospitalized.

The driver of the fleeing vehicle was also declared dead at the scene. Fortunately, two other drivers who were caught up in the multi-vehicle collision escaped without injury. The exact details of how these vehicles were involved in the crash are still being reviewed.

Chief Wahl has announced that the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be leading the investigation into the crash. The CHP will conduct a thorough investigation and reconstruction of the incident to determine the precise cause and circumstances surrounding the collision.
