19-Year-Old Pedestrian Killed in Early Morning Accident on LA 23 in Plaquemines Parish

PLAQUEMINES PARISH, LA – Early this morning, a tragic accident claimed the life of 19-year-old Kyrin Dotson from Baton Rouge. Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating the fatal single-vehicle incident involving a pedestrian just after 4:00 a.m. on LA 23, north of Seatrain Road. According to preliminary findings, Dotson was struck by a 2004 Toyota Tundra while attempting to cross the northbound lanes of LA 23 from east to west.

The accident occurred as the Toyota Tundra was traveling northbound in the left lane. Dotson entered the path of the oncoming vehicle, resulting in a collision that proved fatal. Emergency responders pronounced Dotson dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time, was not injured in the crash. As part of standard procedure, routine toxicology tests were conducted on both Dotson and the driver.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances that led to this fatal accident. The Louisiana State Police emphasize the need for both drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution, particularly in low-light conditions. Pedestrian safety remains a critical concern, as accidents involving pedestrians often have devastating outcomes, especially when visibility is poor or basic safety practices are not followed.

In light of this incident, authorities are reminding the public of important safety tips for pedestrians. To reduce the risk of accidents, pedestrians are encouraged to wear light-colored or reflective clothing, especially when walking near roadways at night. It is also advised that pedestrians avoid crossing in poorly lit areas and use designated crosswalks whenever possible. Facing oncoming traffic while walking can provide a better awareness of approaching vehicles, giving pedestrians more time to react if necessary.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers pedestrians face, particularly during early morning hours when visibility is reduced. Drivers are urged to remain vigilant and be aware of their surroundings, especially in areas where pedestrians might be present. Slowing down in poorly lit or high-risk areas can help prevent accidents and save lives.

The Louisiana State Police continue to investigate this incident and are expected to release further information as more details become available. In the meantime, the focus remains on raising awareness about pedestrian safety and encouraging both drivers and pedestrians to take necessary precautions on the road. By adhering to basic safety measures, the likelihood of such tragic accidents can be significantly reduced, ensuring safer travels for everyone.
