Somerset, NY — The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of 78-year-old Louis A. Greenwald from Lake Wales, Florida. The accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Lake and Carmen Roads in Somerset, prompting an immediate response from emergency services around 2:30 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies quickly began an investigation to determine the cause of the collision.

Initial reports indicate that the crash involved a 2024 Nissan, driven by Greenwald, and a 2019 GMC driven by 77-year-old Earl H. Foster of Wilson, NY. According to the findings, Greenwald’s Nissan was traveling north on Carmen Road when it failed to yield the right of way to Foster’s GMC, which was heading east on Lake Road. This oversight resulted in a significant collision between the two vehicles.

Following the impact, Foster’s GMC veered off the road and landed in a cornfield northwest of the intersection, while Greenwald’s Nissan came to rest in the middle of the intersection. Both vehicles suffered extensive damage due to the crash. Emergency personnel swiftly attended to the drivers involved, providing immediate care at the scene.

Foster was transported to Lockport Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. His prompt treatment by emergency responders ensured that his condition was stabilized without further complications.

Unfortunately, Greenwald’s injuries were far more severe. Due to the extent of his trauma, he was airlifted by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center for advanced medical care. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Greenwald succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The tragic incident has prompted a full investigation by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office as they work to fully understand the circumstances that led to the crash. The Sheriff’s Office is conducting a thorough review of the accident scene, gathering witness statements, and examining any contributing factors that may have played a role in the failure to yield.

This fatal crash has left the Somerset community in shock, as it underscores the critical importance of road safety and vigilance, particularly at intersections known for complex traffic flows. As the investigation continues, the Sheriff’s Office has not yet indicated whether any charges will be filed in connection with the incident.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has additional information to come forward to aid in the investigation. The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to uncovering the truth behind the accident and ensuring that all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined.
