The Virginia State Police (VSP) have identified the man killed by police during a confrontation in Roanoke on June 9 as 41-year-old Travis Taurean Martin, a resident of Roanoke. This incident has sparked significant concern and attention in the community.

The troubling sequence of events began around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday when a man, later identified as Martin, drove past the Roanoke Police Department (RPD) and allegedly shouted threats at officers outside the building. About 15 minutes later, Martin allegedly called 911 and threatened to “kill all Roanoke City Police Officers.” The same individual allegedly made another call to the City of Roanoke E-911 Center, issuing further threats to dispatchers.

As the investigation unfolded, officers obtained two warrants for Threats Over Public Airways and initiated a search for Martin. Around 11:40 a.m., police received a report that Martin had allegedly damaged a Roanoke police car, prompting an additional warrant for property damage.

The situation escalated as officers canvassed the Valley View area around 1:30 p.m. They spotted Martin at a business and requested additional units before initiating a traffic stop in the 2900 block of Hershberger Road NW, at the intersection of Ferncliff Avenue NW. Martin exited his vehicle and allegedly advanced toward officers with an axe. He reportedly struck an occupied patrol vehicle multiple times before allegedly advancing toward another officer.

In response to the immediate threat, two officers discharged their firearms, striking Martin. Despite the rapid response of Roanoke EMS crews, Martin was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. No officers were injured during the incident. Investigators recovered the axe at the scene.

The VSP’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Salem Division, is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the shooting. The collected evidence and findings will be thoroughly reviewed by the Roanoke Commonwealth Attorney’s Office upon completion of the investigation.

This tragic incident has left the Roanoke community in shock and mourning. The ongoing investigation aims to provide clarity on the events that led to the fatal shooting, ensuring a thorough and transparent review process. The authorities are committed to uncovering the full context of the incident to address community concerns and uphold justice.

In the meantime, the Roanoke Police Department and Virginia State Police continue to work diligently to maintain public safety and trust, while supporting the family of Travis Taurean Martin during this difficult time.
