Two Killed in Collision with Semitrailer on US-400 in Wilson County

FREDONIA, Kan. — A tragic crash early Wednesday morning claimed the lives of two people in Wilson County, southeast Kansas. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the fatal accident occurred at 6:35 a.m. on US-400 highway, approximately one mile southeast of Fredonia. The crash involved a car and a semitrailer, resulting in the deaths of both occupants in the car.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the incident happened when a 2000 Freightliner semitrailer, driven by 74-year-old Carl J. Studebaker of Fredonia, was traveling southbound on Jewell Road. Studebaker attempted to make a left turn onto eastbound US-400 but failed to yield to a 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis, which was heading west on US-400. As a result, the Mercury collided with the trailer’s axle, causing severe damage to the vehicle.

The impact of the collision was devastating, and both occupants of the Mercury were pronounced dead at the scene. The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the victims as 76-year-old Donald J. Christeson of Liberty, Kansas, who was driving the car, and 61-year-old Teresa J. Mansfield of Independence, Kansas, who was the passenger. Authorities confirmed that both Christeson and Mansfield were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, underscoring the severity of the collision.

The driver of the semitrailer, Carl J. Studebaker, was not injured in the accident.
