The Harrison community is mourning the tragic death of 13-year-old Mark Anthony Giordano, who passed away after falling from a five-story building on Halstead Avenue. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that no foul play is suspected in the incident, which occurred on Sunday, June 9, 2024.

The Harrison Police Department responded to calls regarding the accident and discovered that Giordano had fallen from a high point while with a group of friends. Reports indicate that Giordano and his friends were riding bikes on the top level of a parking garage near the Metro-North station when the fatal fall occurred. Despite immediate medical attention, Giordano succumbed to his injuries.

Mark Anthony Giordano was a beloved eighth grader at Harrison High School, known for his accomplishments as a student-athlete. He was a prominent member of the school’s wrestling team, competing at 220 pounds and achieving All-League wrestler status and qualifying for Sectional Championships. His promising future in both wrestling and football was tragically cut short.

Giordano was the son of Michelle and the brother of Liza. He was remembered by his community as a respectful, polite, and loving young man. His wrestling team shared a heartfelt tribute on their Facebook page, highlighting his achievements and character:

“Mark was an amazing young man who accomplished so much in so little time. His potential on the mats as well as the football field was unlimited. But most important, he was always respectful, polite, and a wonderful loving teammate, brother, and son.”

In response to this devastating loss, the Superintendent of Schools in Harrison, Dr. Louis N. Wool, issued a statement expressing the collective grief and support of the school community:

“Nothing is more difficult to fathom nor more tragic to experience than the loss of a child. Mark was beloved by his teachers, coaches, and friends. Our exceptional faculty, coaches, and SROs stepped in immediately to support his family and our students. We have mobilized support for our middle and high school students, faculty, and staff and extend that support to anyone in our schools who may have known this resilient and remarkable young man. If your child has been impacted by Mark’s tragic death and needs support, please reach out to your principal.”

To support Giordano’s family during this challenging time, a GoFundMe account has been created by Frank Barchella. The fundraiser aims to assist with funeral expenses and other costs incurred by the family. Barchella emphasized Giordano’s impact on those who knew him:

“Mark was just thirteen years old. He was a student-athlete at Harrison High School and his promise and ceiling at both Football and Wrestling were limitless. He will be missed for the gentle soul and dedicated friend he was to everyone he came in contact with within just a short time here. Our goal is to assist his family in putting Mark to rest and whatever expenses they will encounter in their time of need.”

Mark Anthony Giordano’s untimely death has left a profound void in the Harrison community. As friends, family, and classmates grapple with this loss, the community’s support and solidarity remain steadfast.
