Man died from Fatal Accident Involving West Sacramento Fire Truck

A 49-year-old man fatally struck by a West Sacramento Fire Department truck last Friday has been identified as Glenn Start. The Yolo County Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity on Monday. Along with Start, Katie Petrina Mota was also struck and injured in the accident. Mota remains hospitalized in serious condition at UC Davis Medical Center.

The incident occurred near the 500 block of Jefferson Boulevard, where firefighters were maneuvering a “brush rig,” a fire truck designed for off-road use. Authorities stated that the truck ran over a carpet on the ground, which covered both Start and Mota. Sadly, Glenn Start died at the scene, while Mota was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries.

West Sacramento Fire Chief Steve Binns expressed his sorrow over the incident, emphasizing that the department is cooperating fully with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in the investigation. “We are grieved any time that an emergency response results in a death or injury of someone we are sworn to assist,” said Chief Binns.

Mota’s family remains in shock, waiting for updates on her condition. Her son, Jerry Delgado, voiced frustration at the lack of clear information, adding that his mother has struggled with homelessness for years. “I want to know what happened. My family wants to know what happened,” Delgado said.

This tragic accident has sparked conversations about the dangers faced by unhoused individuals. Rudolph John Kraintz of Safe Ground Sacramento stressed the need for designated safe spaces for the unhoused to prevent such accidents. He advocated for using vacant properties as temporary shelters where people can safely rest without fear of harm.

As the investigation continues, Mota’s family hopes for her recovery and answers regarding the incident. The accident highlights the vulnerability of the unhoused and the pressing need for safer living conditions for those without stable housing.
