Des Moines Man Dies After Hit-and-Run Accident, Suspect Still at Large

A man who was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident on October 9 has tragically died, while the search for the suspect continues. Justin Lee Romaine, 42, succumbed to his injuries on October 25, after being struck by a vehicle while walking along a road in Des Moines. The Des Moines Police Department is urging the public to come forward with any information that could help locate the suspect involved in the fatal incident.

The accident occurred around 7:40 p.m. on October 9, when police responded to reports of pedestrians being hit by a vehicle. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found two men, Romaine and a 45-year-old, lying unconscious in the roadway. A third person, who suffered only a minor foot injury, was also present. Both unconscious men were immediately rushed to the hospital—Romaine in critical condition and the other in serious condition.

After investigating the crash, police traced the vehicle involved, a gray 2007 Honda Odyssey, to its owner, 32-year-old Renato Virves. However, despite efforts to locate Virves, authorities have not yet been able to find him. Police believe Virves may have been behind the wheel at the time of the accident and are urging anyone with information to assist in the investigation.

Romaine’s death marks the 14th traffic-related fatality in Des Moines this year, adding to growing concerns about road safety in the area. The hit-and-run has left the community shaken, and police are intensifying efforts to track down Virves and bring justice to Romaine’s grieving family.

Des Moines authorities continue to appeal for any witnesses or individuals with knowledge of Virves’ whereabouts to contact investigators at 515-323-8382. The hope is that with the public’s help, those responsible for the accident will be held accountable.

This tragic accident underscores the importance of safe driving and the devastating impact hit-and-run incidents can have on families and communities. As the investigation moves forward, residents of Des Moines are encouraged to remain vigilant and assist law enforcement in ensuring road safety for all.
