Cameron Peterson, New Braunfels Man Pleads Guilty to Attempting Mass Shooting Plot
A 20-year-old man from New Braunfels, Cameron Darrick Peterson, has pleaded guilty to attempting to acquire firearms with the intent to commit a mass shooting. This serious admission follows a thorough investigation into his plans, which began in November 2022 and escalated to attempts to purchase weapons in early 2024.
According to court documents, Peterson’s troubling plans took shape over several months. In January 2024, he attempted to buy a 12-gauge shotgun, and in May of the same year, he sought to acquire an assault-style shotgun. However, both purchases were denied due to his age and the specific regulations surrounding those types of firearms. The denials did not deter Peterson, indicating a deepening commitment to his disturbing intentions.
His arrest in June 2024 brought to light a trove of evidence that highlighted the seriousness of his plans. Federal agents uncovered social media posts where Peterson discussed attacking a gas station, as well as surveillance footage of a local grocery store, which he appeared to be surveying for potential targets. These revelations raised alarms about his intentions and the potential risk he posed to the community.
Further investigation revealed that Peterson had materials in his home that could be used to create improvised explosive devices. This discovery intensified concerns about his capabilities and readiness to carry out his violent intentions. The presence of such materials, combined with his attempts to purchase firearms, painted a troubling picture of a young man on the brink of committing a serious act of violence.
Peterson now faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for his actions. His sentencing is scheduled for February 2025, and the case has drawn significant attention due to its implications for public safety and the ongoing issues surrounding gun control and mass shootings in the United States.
The investigation was a collaborative effort involving several agencies, including the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, the San Antonio Fire Department, the New Braunfels Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Their swift action in uncovering Peterson’s plans may have prevented a potentially tragic event, highlighting the critical importance of vigilance and cooperation among law enforcement agencies in addressing threats to public safety. As the case progresses toward sentencing, it serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges related to gun violence and the need for continued awareness and prevention efforts in communities across the nation.
