Man Fatally Shot in Catawba County During Standoff with Law Enforcement

A man was fatally shot during a confrontation with law enforcement in Catawba County early Tuesday morning. According to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 1 a.m. at a residence on Rifle Range Road, where deputies responded to reports of a man threatening self-harm with a firearm.

The individual, identified as Michael Rose, had reportedly been in a crisis. Deputies initially arrived at the home Monday night and safely escorted an elderly woman from the residence. However, the situation escalated, leading to the involvement of the Catawba County Special Tactics and Response (STAR) and crisis intervention teams. Officers attempted to de-escalate the standoff and intended to transport Rose to a hospital for assistance.

While negotiators were still engaging with Rose, officers heard a gunshot from inside the home and observed smoke. Concerned for his safety, members of the STAR Team entered the residence. During the entry, Rose allegedly fired at officers, who returned fire, fatally striking him.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has launched an independent inquiry into the shooting. This marks the third officer-involved shooting in North Carolina since Sunday, highlighting a concerning trend. On Sunday morning, police shot a 16-year-old in Durham, and later that evening, officers fatally shot a man during a reported break-in in Winston-Salem.

The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office has not released further details about the incident or the events leading up to Rose’s death. The SBI’s investigation will focus on determining the exact circumstances of the shooting and whether proper protocols were followed.
