Two Palm Beach County Deputies Killed in Tragic Crash
Two motor deputies from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) were killed in a devastating crash on Thursday morning in western Palm Beach County. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. on Southern Boulevard near Seminole Pratt Whitney Road, where three deputies were conducting traffic enforcement.
Officials stated that the deputies had pulled off the roadway and were waiting for battery cables alongside their PBSO motorcycles. A woman driving an SUV, attempting to pass a slower-moving vehicle, reportedly overcompensated, causing her SUV to veer off the road and strike the deputies. The impact sent all three officers airborne, resulting in catastrophic injuries.
The fallen deputies were identified as Corporal Luis Paez and Deputy Sheriff Ralph “Butch” Waller. Both men were rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to their injuries. A third officer, Deputy Ignacio “Dan” Diaz, was also hit and underwent emergency surgery. Diaz remains in critical but stable condition as he continues to fight for his life.
The loss of Corporal Paez and Deputy Waller has left the PBSO and the local community in mourning. Both officers were described as dedicated public servants with deep ties to the department. In the aftermath of the tragedy, a solemn procession was held to honor their memory and to show solidarity with their families and fellow deputies.
The crash has prompted an ongoing investigation into the driver’s actions and the events leading up to the collision. Authorities are examining whether excessive speed, distraction, or other factors played a role in the crash. No charges have been announced at this time, but officials continue to gather evidence as part of the investigation.
The tragic incident has served as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day, even during routine traffic duties. As the community rallies to support the deputies’ families, the PBSO has asked for prayers and privacy during this difficult time. The department is committed to honoring the fallen officers and ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.
