Bedford, NY – Authorities have identified the man killed in an early-morning crash on Interstate 684 as 54-year-old Howard I. Zaibel, a resident of Brewster, New York. Zaibel was driving a 2021 Kia Sportage when the accident occurred around 5:15 a.m. on Tuesday, November 14.
According to the New York State Police, Zaibel’s vehicle was traveling southbound on I-684 near the Bedford rest area when it unexpectedly veered off the road. His car collided with a 1995 International Harvester tractor-trailer, which had been parked on the westbound shoulder of the southbound lanes. The truck, which was stationary at the time, was struck with significant force.
Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene and transported Zaibel to Northern Westchester Hospital. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, and authorities have yet to determine what might have caused Zaibel’s vehicle to leave the road.
The accident led to delays on the busy interstate as investigators examined the scene. Commuters faced disruptions during the morning rush hour, with traffic backing up for miles along the affected stretch of highway. The New York State Police continue to gather information on the incident, and they have asked any witnesses or those with potential leads to come forward.
Zaibel’s sudden death has left his Brewster community in shock. Friends and family mourn the loss of a man remembered for his warmth and kindness. The accident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that drivers face on highways, particularly in the early hours when visibility can be lower and driver alertness is often compromised.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are expected to release further details regarding any contributing factors to the crash. In the meantime, officials are urging drivers to remain vigilant, especially during morning commutes, to reduce the risk of similar tragic incidents.
