Severe Thunderstorm Claims One Life, Injures Three in Russell County

RUSSELL COUNTY, KS – A severe thunderstorm that swept through Russell County on Wednesday night resulted in the tragic death of one individual and injuries to three others. The deceased, identified as 64-year-old Christopher Montoya from Holyrood, Kansas, was found following the storm’s devastating impact, as confirmed by the Russell County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began around 11:32 p.m. when a powerful thunderstorm, with wind speeds ranging from 60 to 70 mph and hail the size of pennies, hit central Russell County, including the Lake Wilson area. The Russell County emergency services were inundated with numerous 911 calls reporting overturned campers at the lake, prompting a swift response from local authorities.

Upon their arrival, the authorities found several campers severely damaged by the storm. Three individuals at the lake were transported to Russell Regional Hospital with injuries. Unfortunately, Montoya was found deceased in the Hell Creek area of the state park. The exact cause of his death is yet to be determined, pending an autopsy.

In the aftermath of the storm, significant cleanup efforts are underway. Debris is scattered across roads, campgrounds, and water bodies within the park, creating hazardous conditions. Power outages have also been reported in certain areas of Wilson State Park, adding to the challenges faced by the cleanup crews.

Authorities are advising individuals who require assistance in recovering campers, boats, or other personal belongings to contact 911 for support. The cleanup process is being supported by various local and state agencies, including the Russell County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Kansas Highway Patrol, Russell County EMS, Lucas Fire Department, Dorrance Fire Department, and the Army Corps of Engineers.
