      Dr. Dennis Markovitz, Beloved Physician Dies in Tragic Drowning Accident

      The communities of Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, Burlington, Beverly Hospital, and Winchester Hospital are mourning the loss of a respected and beloved physician, Dr. Dennis Markovitz. Dr. Markovitz tragically passed away in a drowning accident on Thursday, July 18, 2024. He was 71 years old.

      Dr. Dennis Markovitz, a dedicated family medicine physician, was with his family when the accident occurred. Known for his compassion and commitment to medicine, Dr. Markovitz was the cherished father of Netana and Raviv Markovitz, both of whom followed in his footsteps into medical careers. He was also the devoted husband of Elana Kreinin Markovitz for 35 years and a loving grandfather to Arielle Markovitz.

      Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1953, Dr. Markovitz graduated cum laude from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in 1978 and was a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed his residency in family medicine at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, a UCLA Affiliate Hospital, and pursued a Fellowship in Faculty Development at the University of North Carolina.

      Dr. Markovitz’s career spanned 46 years, during which he made significant contributions to his field. He practiced at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, Burlington, Beverly Hospital, and Winchester Hospital until his untimely death. His early career included serving as a staff physician for the United Farmworkers, teaching at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and working at Carney Hospital. He later established his family medicine practice in Winchester, Massachusetts, affiliated with Winchester Hospital, where he also served as Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine.

      Dr. Markovitz’s dedication and excellence earned him numerous accolades, including being named to the “Best Doctor in Massachusetts” list multiple times. His passing is a profound loss to his patients, colleagues, and the medical community.

      Funeral services for Dr. Dennis Markovitz will be held on Monday, July 22nd, at 1:30 pm at Temple Emunah, located at 9 Piper Road in Lexington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his honor to The Parkinson’s Foundation, Temple Emunah in Lexington, or the Israel Children’s Fund.

      Dr. Dennis Markovitz’s legacy as an incredible father, husband, grandfather, father-in-law, and friend will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. The community grieves the loss of a remarkable individual who dedicated his life to the service of others through medicine.
