Devon Highbaugh Fatally Shot in Indianapolis Home, Police Investigate Potential Links to Drug Activity

Indianapolis, IN – A man was tragically shot and killed early Wednesday morning in his home on the east side of Indianapolis. Authorities responded to a call just before 1 a.m. and arrived at the residence on Hiner Lane, near Shadeland Avenue, where they discovered 32-year-old Devon Highbaugh with gunshot wounds. Despite efforts by emergency personnel, Highbaugh was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) is investigating the incident, though the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. IMPD Captain Don Weilhammer confirmed that both the home and the victim seemed to have been specifically targeted, but the reasons behind the attack are still unknown. The violent event has left the otherwise peaceful neighborhood in shock.

Neighbors, while concerned, speculated about potential drug involvement, pointing to activity they found suspicious at the home. Additionally, court records reveal that Highbaugh was due for sentencing the following week after pleading guilty to drug-related charges in nearby Hamilton County. Authorities, however, have stated that it is too early to definitively link drugs to the shooting.

This incident marks the first deadly violence in this area in 2024, which had previously maintained a quiet reputation. IMPD Sgt. William Young commented on the typically calm nature of the neighborhood and expressed hope for a quick resolution. The area is located just north of IMPD’s East District headquarters, further emphasizing the shock among residents.

Witnesses present in the home at the time of the shooting were questioned by investigators but were released after providing statements. Law enforcement officials emphasized the importance of community involvement in solving the case. Sgt. Young highlighted that the police department relies on public assistance to address violent crimes effectively.

IMPD is urging anyone with information to come forward. Detective Katie Gourley, with the IMPD Homicide Office, can be reached at 317-327-3475 or via email at Katie.Gourley@indy.gov. Those who wish to remain anonymous can also provide tips to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477. Authorities remain hopeful that community support will lead to the identification and arrest of the person responsible.
