Gladys Rivera-Perez, 59, Killed in Shooting Incident Following Teenage Dispute in Kensington Neighborhood

A tragic shooting incident unfolded around 1:15 p.m. on Friday, June 28, in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood, resulting in the death of 59-year-old Gladys Rivera-Perez. The incident began with a dispute among teenage girls in the 3400 block of Tampa Street. During the altercation, a white vehicle arrived, and a gunman emerged from the driver’s side, opening fire on the group.

As the chaos erupted, the gunman chased the fleeing individuals, firing additional shots in the 600 block of E. Ontario Street. Rivera-Perez, who was on her porch on Crystal Street at the time, heard the gunshots and attempted to find safety inside her home. Tragically, the gunman fired two shots into her house, and one of the bullets struck Rivera-Perez as she tried to reach the second floor.

Despite being rushed to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, Rivera-Perez succumbed to her injuries at 1:44 p.m. that same day. The Philadelphia Police Department responded swiftly to the incident and tracked the gunman’s vehicle to an address on the 1300 block of St. Vincent Street. This led to a barricade situation, and although the vehicle’s owner was detained for questioning, they were released pending further investigation.

The suspect, described as a 39-year-old Hispanic man with a stocky build, long beard, red shirt, and dark baseball cap, remains at large. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the suspect’s identity or whereabouts to contact Philadelphia police at 215-686-TIPS (8477).

Despite the recent tragedy, Philadelphia has reported a 38 percent decrease in homicides compared to the same period last year, with 130 homicides recorded as of Sunday night. In response to the incident and ongoing concerns for public safety, law enforcement has increased patrols in the Kensington area.

The Philadelphia community is reeling from the senseless loss of Rivera-Perez, who was an innocent bystander caught in the violence. Her family, friends, and neighbors are mourning her death, while the police continue their efforts to apprehend the suspect and bring justice to the grieving family.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw expressed her condolences to the family and reiterated the department’s commitment to ensuring public safety. “We are determined to find the individual responsible for this horrific act and bring them to justice,” she stated. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Rivera-Perez family during this incredibly difficult time.”

As the investigation continues, the community is reminded of the importance of cooperation with law enforcement to help reduce violence and enhance safety in the neighborhood. The Philadelphia Police Department remains vigilant and dedicated to protecting its citizens and preventing further tragedies.
