      NEW YORK, NY – The New York City Department of Sanitation is mourning the sudden and unexpected passing of Assistant Chief Harrison Gordon. His death has left family, friends, and colleagues in shock and disbelief. The sad news was confirmed through a heartfelt Facebook post stating, “Colleagues, It is with profound sadness that I write today to share news of the sudden and unfathomable passing of Assistant Chief Harrison Gordon.” The cause of Gordon’s death has not been disclosed.

      Chief Harrison Gordon’s career with the Department of Sanitation spanned 23 years, marked by exceptional service and numerous achievements. He began his career as a Sanitation Worker in Manhattan’s MN07 district, where his dedication and strong work ethic quickly became evident. His commitment to excellence saw him rise to a supervisory role in Brooklyn’s BKN05 district, where he demonstrated outstanding leadership and a commitment to maintaining high standards.

      Gordon’s career trajectory continued its upward path as he became Superintendent in the Bronx, managing operations and ensuring efficient sanitation services. His remarkable performance and expertise led to his promotion to Deputy Chief in the Bureau of Information Technology (BIT). In this capacity, he oversaw crucial projects and initiatives, further establishing his reputation as a competent and reliable leader.

      In September 2022, Harrison Gordon was promoted to Assistant Chief, a position that came with significant responsibilities. He took on an executive role in the Cleaning Office and served as the Brooklyn North Borough Chief. This position allowed him to have a broader impact on sanitation services, implementing strategies and policies that greatly benefited the community. His leadership and vision were instrumental in enhancing the effectiveness of the department’s operations.

      In his final assignment, Chief Gordon was entrusted with overseeing one of the Department’s signature initiatives—cleaning up the city’s highways. This task required meticulous planning and execution, reflecting his capability and trustworthiness. He carried out these executive assignments with compassion, joy, and grace, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the community.

      Beyond his professional achievements, Harrison was more than just a wonderful colleague and a talented Chief. He was a great friend to many and a mentor in his role as Vice President of the African American Benevolent Society. In this capacity, he provided guidance, support, and inspiration to many, fostering a sense of community and solidarity. Harrison Gordon’s passing is a tremendous loss, and his legacy of service and leadership will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
