Bethel Home Explosion Claims Two Lives, Leaves One Injured
A devastating explosion and fire rocked the Bethel community Tuesday morning, killing two people and critically injuring another. The incident occurred at a residence on Vic Joy Drive, leaving neighbors shaken and authorities scrambling to determine the cause.
Fire officials received reports of a fire with possible entrapment around 8:44 a.m. Bethel-Tate Fire Chief Christopher Cooper confirmed that calls of an explosion came in as crews were en route. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the home engulfed in flames and debris scattered across the area, damaging nearby properties.
The victims were identified as Barry and his girlfriend, Helen Judy, who were pronounced dead at the scene. A third victim, an HVAC technician, suffered severe burn injuries and was rushed to UC Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. Emergency responders also rescued three cats from the scene, which neighbors referred to as “the cat house” due to the numerous cats frequently seen on the property.
The explosion, described as “deafening” by nearby residents, shook homes and woke many from their sleep. The fire was extinguished within 45 minutes with assistance from four mutual aid departments. However, the destruction was extensive, reducing the home to rubble and scattering debris across the neighborhood.
The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office is leading the investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and fire. Investigators are combing through the wreckage to pinpoint its origin. Meanwhile, doorbell camera footage and resident photos showing the destruction have circulated widely on social media.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and the injuries sustained in this incident,” Chief Cooper said. “We’re working tirelessly to determine the cause of the explosion and ensure the safety of the community.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information, photos, or video evidence to contact the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office as they continue their investigation into the tragic event.
