Jameisha Wilkes Fatally Shot in Northwest Charlotte; Dasean Maddox Arrested

A fatal shooting at the Ascent at Mallard Creek Apartments in northwest Charlotte on Wednesday afternoon has left a community shaken. The incident occurred on Strive Street, just off Odell School Road near Interstate 485, at approximately 3:30 p.m., when a woman was gunned down in the complex’s parking lot.

Witnesses described hearing a series of gunshots, initially mistaking the first shot for a car backfiring. Charles Armstrong, a nearby resident, recounted, “It was one loud bang at first, which sounded like a car backfiring. Then it was a succession of loud bangs.” He later spotted the victim lying on the pavement and immediately called 911.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department identified the victim as 33-year-old Jameisha Wilkes. Witnesses reported seeing a man, dressed in all black, fire the shots before fleeing the scene through a breezeway. Despite the rapid response, Wilkes was pronounced dead at the scene.

By Thursday, police announced the arrest of 32-year-old Dasean Maddox in connection with the murder. Maddox has been charged with first-degree murder and robbery and is being held at the Mecklenburg County Jail. According to court documents, Maddox confessed to a family member that he had driven to Wilkes’ apartment, shot her, and destroyed her phone after taking it. The motive appears to stem from a personal conflict; Maddox told the family member that he had impregnated Wilkes.

The violent act, committed in broad daylight, has left residents of the complex uneasy. “I don’t feel safe,” Armstrong said. “I imagine everybody feels that way right now, just not knowing and it being broad daylight.”

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers. The tragic loss of Jameisha Wilkes has added another case to Charlotte’s growing list of homicides, underscoring the pressing need for community safety measures.
