Jason Hines killed in Fatal Scarborough Stabbing; One Charged with Murder
TORONTO, Ontario – Toronto police have identified the victim in a fatal stabbing that took place early Thursday morning at a Toronto Community Housing apartment complex in Scarborough. The victim, Jason Hines, 43, was found with stab wounds at the high-rise building on Lawrence Avenue East, near Kingston Road.
Officers were called to the scene around 6 a.m. and found Hines, who was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival. While police did not specify the exact location of the stabbing within the building, investigators were observed gathering evidence around the 10th floor of the complex.
Following the incident, police arrested three individuals at the scene. Among them, 55-year-old Michael Currie, also from Toronto, has been charged with second-degree murder. Authorities have not disclosed the details of any charges against the other two individuals, identified as one man and one woman, who were also taken into custody.
Duty Inspector Todd Jocko informed reporters on Thursday that “all parties are known to one another,” suggesting that the incident may not have been a random act of violence. The investigation is ongoing, and police are looking into the relationships between those involved.
Residents of the apartment complex expressed concern about escalating safety issues within the building. One resident told CityNews that conditions are “getting worse and worse every day” and urged the government to implement stricter rules to improve safety. This high-rise has seen previous violent incidents, including a fatal fire last year and a shooting in 2018 in one of its stairwells.
Toronto Community Housing (TCH) addressed community concerns in a statement, acknowledging that this particular building has significant safety needs. “This is one of our highest needs buildings. That’s why we’ve joined forces with the City, the Toronto Police Service, and a wide range of community partners to address the challenges this community is dealing with, including mental health, addiction, and homelessness,” the statement read.
As the investigation progresses, Toronto Police and TCH are emphasizing the importance of community support to help address the underlying issues impacting residents’ safety. Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact Toronto Police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
