The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the victim, 17-year-old Johnny Phommathep II, was part of a family group from Tehama County that encountered distress while out on the water. The incident occurred on the evening of November 2, when the group’s boat capsized off the Sonoma County coast.

The group consisted of six individuals from Corning, including three juveniles. They had set out on a recreational fishing trip to participate in the first day of the Dungeness crab season. Unfortunately, during their outing, the boat, a 21-foot Bayliner, overturned, leading to a dire situation on the water. After receiving a report about the boat failing to return to shore by the expected time of 7 p.m., concerned family members contacted the authorities.

In response, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office initiated a search and rescue operation, involving the U.S. Coast Guard and several other local and state agencies. The Coast Guard was alerted to the incident and began coordinating a search that included efforts from land, sea, and air. During the search operation, crews were able to locate an 11-year-old boy alive along South Salmon Creek Beach. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office stated that they would transition their efforts to a recovery mission, indicating that they would continue to search for the remaining missing persons but would not conduct an active search.
