      Tragic Collision on Highway 20 Claims Lives of Jose Manuel Zapata and Scott Thomas Novotny

      TOLEDO, OR – A devastating collision on Monday evening along Highway 20 has resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left several others critically injured, according to reports from the Oregon State Police (OSP). The incident occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. near milepost 30, east of Toledo, involving three vehicles.

      OSP’s investigation revealed that a westbound Toyota Rav4, driven by 29-year-old Jose Manuel Zapata from Portland, attempted to overtake a Dodge Ram 2500 towing a trailer. In the process, the Toyota collided with an eastbound Acura TL, causing a catastrophic impact that brought all three vehicles to an uncontrolled halt on the highway.

      Tragically, Jose Manuel Zapata, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Acura TL, identified as 34-year-old Scott Thomas Novotny from Newport, was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

      Additionally, a passenger in the Toyota and occupants of the Dodge Ram 2500 sustained severe injuries and were promptly transported to local hospitals. Their current medical conditions remain uncertain.

      OSP has attributed the collision to an unsafe passing maneuver, highlighting the dangers associated with such actions on highways. In response to the incident, Highway 20 had to be closed for approximately six hours to facilitate the thorough investigation required by authorities.
