      Coast Guard Mourns the Loss of Petty Officer Second Class Katya Fons

      The Coast Guard community and residents of Eastport Auburn, Maine, are mourning the sudden and tragic loss of Petty Officer Second Class Katya Fons from the Coast Guard Cutter Maple (WLB-207). The 2018 graduate of St. Dominic Regional High School passed away unexpectedly this week, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, athleticism, and a deep love for the ocean.

      Katya Fons was a standout athlete during her high school years at St. Dominic Regional High School, where she was admired for her resilience and vibrant passion for the sea. Her commitment to the maritime service led her to join the Coast Guard, where she served diligently in the Aids to Navigation sector in Portsmouth, Virginia. Her service was characterized by a steadfast dedication to her duties and a strong sense of camaraderie with her fellow crew members.

      As a Boatswain’s Mate in the Deck department on the Coast Guard Cutter Maple, Katya played a crucial role in various operations and events. She actively participated in several Buoy Tender Round-up activities, showcasing her skills and teamwork in events such as the Survival Swim, Chain Pull, Spin & Hook, Tug-O-War, and the Heat and Beat. These events not only demonstrated her physical capabilities but also her leadership and camaraderie, qualities that endeared her to her peers and superiors alike.

      In an interview, Katya expressed her pride in being a part of the Coast Guard and highlighted the importance of events like the Round-up in fostering team spirit and connections among crews who share similar missions. Her enthusiasm and commitment to her role were evident to all who knew her, making her passing a significant loss to the community and the service.

      Katya was also a loving partner to Ray Gagne of Maine, and a cherished sister, friend, and teammate. Her unexpected death has left a void in the lives of those who knew her and loved her. The cause of her death has not been confirmed at this time, and her family is expected to release her obituary and funeral arrangements in due course.

      The Eastport Auburn community and the Coast Guard family are rallying together to support Katya’s loved ones during this difficult time. Her legacy of service, dedication, and love for the ocean will be remembered by all who had the honor of serving with her and those whose lives she touched.
