Suspect in Deputy Constable Maher Husseini’s Killing Apprehended in Galveston, Texas

On the afternoon of September 3, 2024, the suspect involved in the fatal shooting of Harris County Precinct 4 Deputy Constable Maher Husseini was apprehended in Galveston, Texas. The tragic incident occurred on Husseini’s way to work around 12:45 p.m. at the intersection of Richmond Avenue and Fondren Road in southwest Houston. The suspect approached Husseini’s vehicle and fired multiple shots, resulting in the deputy’s death despite life-saving efforts at Ben Taub Hospital.

Following the shooting, the Houston Police Department (HPD) launched an extensive manhunt, utilizing surveillance footage to track the suspect. The suspect, who was driving a silver Chevrolet Impala, was eventually located near the Causeway Bridge in Galveston. In a desperate attempt to evade capture, the suspect drove the vehicle into the water. After the Impala submerged, the suspect exited the vehicle and was apprehended by HPD officers while still in the water.

This arrest comes amid a tragic week for Texas law enforcement, following the ambush of Officer Darron Burks in Dallas just days prior. Deputy Husseini, who had served with Constable Mark Herman’s Office since 2021, was known for his dedication and had recently been promoted.

The community and fellow law enforcement officers continue to mourn the loss of a dedicated officer whose life was cut short in an act of violence. The tragic event has heightened concerns for the safety of officers, particularly in the line of duty. Constable Mark Herman expressed his condolences, noting the profound loss felt by the department and the community.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the motive behind the attack. The suspect’s identity and potential charges have not been released, pending further investigation. Governor Greg Abbott reiterated his commitment to supporting law enforcement and ensuring that justice is served.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The HPD urges anyone with additional information related to the incident to come forward as they continue to piece together the circumstances leading to Deputy Husseini’s death.
