Mark Carnevale, PGA TOUR winner, Passes Away Unexpectedly at 64

Mark Carnevale, a respected figure in the world of professional golf, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 22, 2024, at the age of 64. Known for his perseverance and dedication to the sport, Carnevale turned professional in 1983 and experienced a long and varied career, which eventually saw him secure a place on the PGA TOUR.

Carnevale’s journey to the PGA TOUR was not an easy one. After seven unsuccessful attempts at Q-School and numerous years competing on the mini-tour and state-open circuits, his hard work finally paid off when he tied for 18th at the 1991 Qualifying Tournament. This achievement earned him a spot on the PGA TOUR, making him a rookie once again at the age of 32.

Despite his late start, Carnevale’s tenacity was put to the test in his initial outings as a full member of the PGA TOUR. In his first ten events, he managed to make the cut only five times. His best finish during this period was a tie for 39th place at the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic (now the Sanderson Farms Championship), which earned him a modest check for $1,081. Although he struggled with poor cuts initially, he showed gradual improvement, securing ties for 13th place at the BellSouth Classic and 19th place at the Centel Western Open.

Carnevale’s breakthrough came in Tennessee at the Chattanooga Classic, held at Council Fire Golf Club, which straddles both Georgia and Tennessee. In a memorable performance, Carnevale triumphed over Ed Dougherty and Dan Forsman by two strokes in the final round. This victory not only earned him his sole PGA TOUR win but also led to him being named the PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year.

Mark Carnevale’s career in golf extended beyond his playing days. His love for the sport saw him transition into roles as an administrator and, most recently, as a broadcaster. His knowledge and passion for golf made him a respected voice in the broadcasting arena, where he continued to contribute to the sport he loved.

The news of Carnevale’s passing has left the golfing community in mourning. His journey from a determined aspirant to a celebrated PGA TOUR winner and broadcaster is a testament to his dedication and resilience. Mark Carnevale’s legacy will be remembered for his significant contributions to golf, both on and off the course.
