Mark Patterson, Wetumpka Man Killed in Millbrook Crash During Police Pursuit
Millbrook, Ala. — A tragic single-vehicle crash on Friday evening claimed the life of a Wetumpka man, identified as 45-year-old Mark E. Patterson. The incident unfolded around 6:16 p.m. when Patterson, driving a 2014 Ford F150, left the roadway while being pursued by law enforcement officers. The truck veered onto private property, eventually overturning in a ravine near the Interstate 65 Service Road, close to Real Life Church in Millbrook.
According to authorities, Patterson was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the accident. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reports that before the crash, Patterson was involved in a pursuit led by a deputy from the Autauga County Sheriff’s Office along with officers from Millbrook Police. The specific reasons for the pursuit and additional details surrounding the events leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
The site of the accident, located roughly three miles north of Montgomery in Elmore County, saw a significant law enforcement response as Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division initiated an in-depth investigation. So far, officials have not released further details as they work to piece together the circumstances of the crash.
This incident highlights the critical importance of seat belt use, as Patterson’s fatal injuries might have been mitigated had he been properly restrained. Authorities routinely remind drivers that seat belts are essential for reducing injury risk during sudden impacts or rollovers.
Law enforcement has expressed condolences for Patterson’s family during this difficult time and urges the public to remember the dangers associated with high-speed pursuits and the importance of roadway safety precautions. The ALEA has promised to continue with its investigation, pledging to keep the community informed of any new findings as they come to light.
The incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks involved in both high-speed pursuits and driving without a seat belt. Local authorities are expected to review the pursuit’s circumstances to determine if further safety protocols or adjustments are necessary to enhance public safety in future incidents.
