      Tragic Plane Crash Claims Lives of Col. Mark Tyson Sletten and Paul Kondrat in Alaska

      Alaska – In a heartbreaking incident, the Alaska Department of Public Safety announced on Thursday that two men lost their lives in a remote lake following a small plane crash. The victims have been identified as Col. Mark “Tyson” Sletten, a 46-year-old Air Force colonel, and Paul Kondrat, a 41-year-old from Utah.

      Col. Mark “Tyson” Sletten served as the director of operations for the Alaskan Command, a critical component of the U.S. Northern Command, based in Anchorage. Known for his dedication and service, Col. Sletten’s loss is a significant blow to the military community. Paul Kondrat, an aviation enthusiast from Utah, was also on board the plane. The two were on an instructional flight when their aircraft tragically crashed into Crescent Lake near Moose Pass on the Kenai Peninsula.

      The crash was first reported by two hikers who witnessed the incident and alerted the Alaska Wildlife Troopers. A search and rescue operation was immediately launched. Despite initial hopes, search teams found debris on the lake but no survivors. The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center, alongside volunteers from the Alaska Dive, Search, Rescue, and Recovery Team, employed sonar, remotely operated vehicles, and trained divers in their extensive search efforts.

      After an exhaustive search, the wreckage of the plane was located at a depth of approximately 193 feet. With the assistance of divers and a remotely operated vehicle, the plane was brought to shore. The bodies of Col. Sletten and Kondrat were subsequently transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.

      The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has taken charge of investigating the cause of the crash. The investigation will aim to uncover the factors that led to this tragic accident and prevent similar incidents in the future.
