Birmingham Police Investigate Fatal Shooting of 38-Year-Old Melvin Anthony Burkes
Authorities in Birmingham have identified 38-year-old Melvin Anthony Burkes as the victim in a recent fatal shooting that also left another man injured. The incident unfolded on Wednesday evening around 6 p.m. in the 1700 block of Pearson Avenue S.W. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed Burkes’ identity, revealing that he was a resident of Birmingham.
Upon receiving reports of gunfire, Birmingham Police officers arrived on the scene to find one man suffering from non-life-threatening injuries and Burkes lying on the sidewalk with severe gunshot wounds. According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald, bystanders initially attempted life-saving measures for Burkes until emergency responders took over. Both victims were then transported to UAB Hospital by the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service. Sadly, Burkes was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at 6:27 p.m.
As part of the investigation, police have detained one person for questioning, and preliminary reports suggest that all individuals involved in the incident knew one another. Fitzgerald noted, “We believe this incident originated from a dispute between the deceased and a third adult male.” The third individual was reportedly not injured during the event, adding weight to the theory that this was a targeted confrontation between acquaintances rather than a random act of violence.
The case marks Birmingham’s 134th homicide this year, reflecting a troubling increase in fatal violence within the city. Ten of these homicides have been deemed justifiable, and two additional cases involve victims from previous years who succumbed to their injuries in 2024. Jefferson County as a whole has recorded 169 homicides this year, underscoring the ongoing challenges authorities face in curbing violence in the region.
Local law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Burkes’ death, including any underlying motives tied to the dispute. The Birmingham Police Department has encouraged community members to come forward with any relevant information, as tips could prove instrumental in clarifying the events leading up to the tragedy.
Authorities urge anyone with knowledge of the incident to reach out to Birmingham homicide investigators at 205-254-1764 or to provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
