      Montserrat Martorell Elias

DERRY, Northern Ireland — The woman found murdered in a city centre flat on Saturday has been identified as 65-year-old Montserrat Martorell Elias. Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed her identity on Monday, revealing that Ms. Elias had relatives in Spain who are now grappling with the devastating loss.

The investigation into her death is being led by the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team, who have renewed their appeal for information. They have also issued a description of a man they wish to speak with in connection to the murder. The suspect is described as a white man in his 30s, who was seen in the area between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., wearing a grey jacket with the hood up, blue jeans, trainers, and a light-colored shirt.

Detective Chief Inspector Anthony Kelly, who is overseeing the case, stated, “Our detectives are working at full pace to establish exactly what happened. My thoughts at this time are first and foremost with Ms. Elias’ family and friends in Spain, who are left trying to come to terms with their loss.” He added that the online speculation surrounding the case has been “extremely unhelpful” and is causing distress to Ms. Elias’ family. Inspector Kelly emphasized that any social media posts that could prejudice the investigation or future judicial proceedings would be thoroughly examined.

The tragic discovery was made in a flat on Harvey Street during the early hours of Saturday, August 24, following reports of a fire. Crews from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, along with the Ambulance Service and police, responded to the scene. Despite efforts, Ms. Elias was pronounced dead upon discovery. The investigation quickly shifted focus after it was determined that she had suffered a violent attack, resulting in multiple injuries.

DCI Kelly described the attack as “horrific” and confirmed that the murder inquiry remains at an early stage, with ongoing efforts to gather crucial evidence. Authorities continue to appeal for any information that might assist the investigation, urging anyone who witnessed anything suspicious or has knowledge related to the incident to come forward. Even details that might seem insignificant could be vital in solving the case.

The brutal nature of the crime and the circumstances surrounding the fire have left the Derry community in shock. As police work tirelessly to identify and apprehend the suspect, the public is reminded to provide any tips directly to detectives via the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 225 24/08/24.

The PSNI is determined to bring justice for Montserrat Martorell Elias and her grieving family, with further updates expected as the investigation progresses.
