Noel Hernandez shot to death by Columbus Police after charging at the officers with the weapon

Hernandez first drove north on Georgesville Road before turning west onto Sullivant Avenue. He stopped briefly, exited his vehicle with the weapon, and ignored further commands from the officers.

Hernandez then re-entered his vehicle and continued driving west on Sullivant Avenue, eventually stopping at the intersection of Sullivant Avenue and Industrial Mile Road. There, he exited the vehicle again, walked into oncoming traffic with the weapon, and continued to ignore the officers’ commands. An officer’s attempt to subdue him with a Taser was unsuccessful, and Hernandez charged at the officers with the weapon, prompting them to open fire.

Officers provided medical assistance to Hernandez until paramedics arrived. He was transported to OhioHealth Doctors Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:49 p.m. Brian Steel, president of the Fraternal Order of Police in Franklin County, visited the scene the following morning and spoke with investigators. Steel noted that the officers felt threatened by Hernandez’s actions, which led to the shooting.

The Franklin County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Noel Hernandez.
