24-Year-Old Olivia Graves Fatally Shot While Shielding Nephew in Southeast D.C.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A tragic shooting on Thursday afternoon claimed the life of 24-year-old Olivia Graves as she attempted to shield her 12-year-old nephew during a confrontation near Atlantic Street and 8th Street in Southeast D.C. Graves, who had just picked up her nephew from school, was with friends who were giving them a ride home when the incident unfolded.
According to her mother, Ondraya Graves, Olivia and her nephew had made a brief stop when a confrontation erupted nearby. Although Olivia was not involved in the dispute, she reportedly tried to help calm the situation. During the escalating tension, 62-year-old Maurice Jackson allegedly approached the car, misunderstanding the nature of the conflict and threatening those inside. He reportedly issued a warning before opening fire.
In the tragic exchange, Olivia was struck in the chest. Her nephew, who was also in the vehicle, narrowly escaped harm as multiple shots were fired. Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported Olivia to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
D.C. police have since arrested Jackson, charging him with second-degree murder in connection with Olivia’s death. Authorities are actively investigating the shooting to better understand the sequence of events and Jackson’s motivations.
This devastating incident has left family members heartbroken and a community grappling with yet another act of violence. Olivia’s mother expressed her profound grief, sharing that Olivia was a beloved daughter, a caring aunt, and a protective figure for her nephew. Her death has left a void that will be deeply felt by those who knew her.
D.C. law enforcement continues to gather evidence and has asked any witnesses or individuals with information about the incident to come forward. This case underscores the ripple effect of violence, as Olivia’s family and community mourn the loss of a young life taken too soon.
