Family and Activists Demand Investigation After Woman Found Fatally Shot in South Los Angeles

SOUTH LOS ANGELES, CA – July 4, 2024 – The family of Raejonette Morgan, a 22-year-old woman found fatally shot in a bullet-riddled Mercedes-Benz, along with activists, are calling for a thorough investigation into her death. The incident occurred at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday on Vermont Avenue near the 105 Freeway overpass, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies responding to the scene discovered Morgan in the driver’s seat of the vehicle, which was marked with multiple bullet holes on the driver-side door and windows. The car came to a stop near a freeway entrance, drawing a crowd of onlookers. A witness broadcasted live footage on Facebook, capturing the moment deputies removed Morgan from the car and laid her on the ground.

An initial examination of Morgan’s injuries was conducted by a deputy on the scene, followed by the arrival of paramedics from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Morgan was transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries on Thursday.

In a statement released by activist Najee Ali on behalf of Morgan’s family and civil rights attorney Ben Crump, there was a call for a full investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The family and activists accused a deputy of failing to provide necessary aid to Morgan immediately after the shooting.

“We demand justice for Raejonette and a complete investigation into the circumstances surrounding her tragic death,” said Najee Ali. The Sheriff’s Department has yet to respond to these accusations, and a meeting with Los Angeles Deputy Sheriff Robert Luna has been requested by the family and their legal representatives.

This incident has sparked outrage in the community, with calls for increased accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies. Activists and family members are urging the public to come forward with any information that might aid in the investigation.

As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, seeking answers and justice for Raejonette Morgan. Anyone with information related to the shooting is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The family and activists hope that this case will prompt changes to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
