Fatal Head-On Collision in Livingston Parish Claims One Life; Suspect Arrested

A tragic head-on collision in Livingston Parish on Monday afternoon resulted in the death of a 47-year-old man, leading to the arrest of another driver involved. The Louisiana State Police (LSP) have identified the victim as Raymond Lexia Jr., a resident of Independence, Louisiana. The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. on Louisiana Highway 43, near Turkey Creek Road.

The driver responsible for the collision, 35-year-old Mitchell Ballard, now faces charges of negligent homicide and careless operation. Following the crash, Ballard was arrested and processed at the Livingston Parish Jail.

According to LSP’s preliminary investigation, Lexia was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger northbound on Louisiana Highway 43 when the incident unfolded. Ballard was heading southbound in a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe. For reasons still under investigation, Ballard’s vehicle veered off the roadway, causing him to overcorrect and cross into the northbound lanes, leading to a head-on collision with Lexia’s truck.

Despite wearing a seatbelt, Lexia succumbed to his injuries at the scene. In contrast, Ballard, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained only minor injuries. Emergency responders quickly arrived, but Lexia was pronounced dead on-site, highlighting the severity of the impact.

The LSP stated that impairment is not currently suspected as a contributing factor in the crash. However, as part of standard procedure, toxicology samples have been collected from both drivers for analysis, with results pending. The investigation remains active as authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the collision.
