81-Year-Old Robert Stephen Bell Killed in Foggy South Dakota Crash
An 81-year-old man, Robert Stephen Bell of Jasper, Minnesota, tragically lost his life in a two-vehicle collision near Garretson, South Dakota, on November 14. The crash occurred at approximately 6:19 p.m. on South Dakota Highway 11, three miles north of the town.
According to initial reports from the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the collision took place at the intersection of SD Highway 11 and 250th Street. A 2020 Buick Encore, driven by a 71-year-old woman, was traveling northbound on Highway 11 when it was struck by a 2015 Kia Sorento, operated by a 33-year-old man. Investigators believe the Kia failed to stop at a stop sign, colliding with the Buick, which had the right of way.
Robert Bell, a passenger in the Buick, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Both drivers sustained serious injuries but were reported to be in non-life-threatening condition. Emergency responders provided immediate aid, and the injured were transported to a nearby medical facility for further treatment.
Investigators have identified dense fog as a likely contributing factor in the crash. Reduced visibility may have impaired the Kia Sorento driver’s ability to see the stop sign, resulting in the tragic collision. Authorities are continuing their investigation to fully understand the circumstances, including road conditions, weather, and vehicle factors.
All individuals involved were wearing seatbelts, which likely prevented additional fatalities. This incident underscores the critical importance of following traffic signals and driving cautiously, particularly in challenging weather conditions like heavy fog. Authorities are urging drivers to reduce speed and remain vigilant when navigating roadways with low visibility.
As the investigation progresses, no charges have been announced. The community mourns the loss of Robert Stephen Bell, reflecting on his life and offering support to his grieving family and friends. This tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of the need for heightened caution on the roads, especially during adverse weather conditions.
