      Maryville, Tennessee – Earlier today, deputies from the Blount County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check and potential domestic situation at a residence on Jacob Springs Boulevard in Rockford. The call, which came in during the early afternoon, quickly escalated into a dangerous confrontation.

      Deputy Corbin Smith and Deputy Edward Walker arrived on the scene at 3:19 pm. As they approached, the suspect, identified as 59-year-old Ronald Reed Millsaps, emerged from the garage. The situation took a sudden turn when Millsaps disappeared from view briefly, then reappeared and began firing at the deputies.

      Caught off guard, Deputy Smith and Deputy Walker took cover behind their vehicles. During this exchange, both deputies were struck by gunfire. They were promptly taken to U.T. Medical Center, where they are now in stable condition, receiving treatment for their injuries. Despite being under fire, the deputies managed to return gunfire, forcing Millsaps back into the residence.

The Blount County Sheriff’s SWAT team, along with multiple agencies from the surrounding area, converged on the scene to provide support. Amidst the ongoing gunfire, the SWAT team executed a daring rescue operation, successfully extricating Deputy Smith and Deputy Walker.

      As the situation developed, deputies received critical information indicating that Millsaps had threatened to shoot an elderly female inside the home. Acting swiftly to prevent further harm, the SWAT team breached the residence. They managed to apprehend Millsaps without further incident shortly after 5 pm. The suspect is now in custody at the Blount County Correctional Facility, facing multiple felony charges for his actions.

      The elderly woman, who was inside the home during the ordeal, was unharmed but was transported to a local hospital by AMR Ambulance Service for observation. Her safety, along with that of the responding officers, was a primary concern during the incident.
