PUEBLO, CO – The family of Ronald Ray Valdez, 34, confirmed to KRDO 13 on Saturday that he was the man fatally shot by police officers on Wednesday night. Although authorities have yet to officially identify him, the family has spoken out about the incident.

According to police reports, the incident began around 7:45 p.m. when officers responded to a report of a man with a gun in the parking lot of a Popeye’s restaurant near the intersection of US 50 and Outlook Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers found Valdez in a vehicle and instructed him to show his hands. Valdez allegedly refused to comply and instead began shooting at the officers. The officers returned fire, resulting in Valdez’s death at the scene. Fortunately, no officers were injured.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave as part of the standard procedure while an investigation is conducted.

Rev. Paul Montoya, a local pastor known for his work with the homeless community, shared that the Valdez family requested him to lead a vigil on Saturday evening. Although he did not personally know Ronald Ray Valdez, he was familiar with his sisters and described them as a wonderful family. Rev. Montoya noted that the family had previously supported his work through donations.

Reflecting on the incident, Rev. Montoya expressed surprise at the events, stating they seemed inconsistent with Valdez’s character. He remained neutral and focused on providing comfort and support to the grieving family. He also expressed his willingness to assist with the funeral arrangements.

Tragically, this was not the first time Rev. Montoya had conducted such a service. On the same evening, he heard another shooting on the East Side, underscoring the ongoing violence in the community. Rev. Montoya emphasized the importance of communities supporting one another and understanding the challenges faced by both the police and the affected families.

He acknowledged that the lack of immediate answers can be difficult for families, but stressed the necessity of following proper investigative procedures to ensure the truth is ultimately revealed.

The shooting incident involving Ronald Ray Valdez has sparked a range of reactions within the community. As the investigation continues, many are calling for transparency and accountability. Authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Community leaders, including Rev. Montoya, are urging residents to come together in support of one another during this challenging time. The incident highlights the ongoing issues of gun violence and the need for community solidarity and understanding.
