The King’s Christian School and Cherokee High School in New Jersey are grieving the tragic loss of 13-year-old Seth Rice, who passed away in a swimming accident on Friday, July 19, 2024. Seth was the beloved son of Howard P. J. Rice, a Delaware State University graduate, and Sarah Rice, a Saint Augustine’s University graduate. The heartbreaking incident has left the community in deep sorrow.

Seth Rice was an athletic and brilliant 8th grader with a bright future ahead. Known for his cheerful demeanor and love for God, Seth was a dedicated brother to Sarai and Stephen. His tragic passing has deeply affected everyone who knew him. According to the family, law enforcement was called to the scene of a possible water accident, where Seth was pronounced dead.

In response to this devastating loss, the community has rallied to support the Rice family. A GoFundMe account has been set up by 8th grade King’s Christian moms, Karen Katulka and Joanne Sharp, to help ease the funeral costs. The campaign has received an outpouring of support from friends, families, and teachers. The fundraiser reads, “On behalf of all the families, friends, teachers, and anyone who knew the beautiful life of Seth Rice, we are seeking to raise funds to help the Rice family carry the burden of the sudden loss of Seth from a pool-related accident. If you feel so led, please feel free to make a gift to help towards any costs that they may endure. With the deepest compassion for this family who loves the Lord.”

In addition to the GoFundMe campaign, a Meal Train has been organized to provide meals for the Rice family during this difficult time. The Meal Train invitation states, “Here is a signup link to provide a meal for the Rice family. Most importantly, please continue to pray for Seth’s father, mother, brother, and sister as they navigate their tremendous loss and support them moving forward.”
