      Tragic Loss of Sterling Allen Walsh, Beloved Teacher and Coach in New Lisbon Accident

      New Lisbon, WI – Sterling Allen Walsh, a cherished member of the community in New Lisbon and formerly of Sauk City, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 15, 2024. He was surrounded by his family at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse following a tragic accident. Born on October 21, 1994, to Dean and Joanne (Vertein) Walsh at Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital, Sterling’s life was marked by passion, dedication, and love.

      Sterling’s journey began at Sauk Prairie High School, where he distinguished himself as both a soccer player and a tennis standout. Throughout his four years, he excelled in tennis, eventually becoming the #1 singles player and Team Captain. His leadership skills and commitment to sports set him apart early on.

      After high school, Sterling pursued his passion for education at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, where he earned a BA in education. It was during a summer job with the Dells Army Ducks that he met Katie Nelson, the love of his life. Sterling and Katie married on October 2, 2021, and made their home in New Lisbon, where Sterling served as a dedicated math teacher at Mauston High School since 2019.

      Known for his positive outlook and competitive spirit, Sterling thrived as an advisor for the School Math Team, leading them to victory in the South-Central Conference Math Competition and securing Mauston’s first championship. He also held coaching roles as Head Coach for the Girls’ Tennis Team and Assistant Coach for the Boys’ Tennis Team, earning admiration from his students, colleagues, friends, and family alike. To know Sterling was to love him.

      Beyond his professional life, Sterling enjoyed bowling, a hobby he embraced enthusiastically, even convincing Katie to join a couple’s bowling league. He also found joy in video games, which kept him connected with his friends.

      Funeral arrangements for Sterling Walsh will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 100 Oak St., Prairie du Sac. Visitation is scheduled on Sunday, June 23, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m., with the funeral service following at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 24. Interment will take place at Prairie du Sac Cemetery.

      In honoring Sterling’s generous spirit, his family has chosen organ donation, recognizing the gift of life he continues to give. They extend heartfelt thanks to the healthcare professionals at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital, particularly Nurse Anna, the organ donation team, and the Juneau County first responders, for their compassionate care and support during this difficult time. Sterling Walsh leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication that will forever be cherished by all who knew him.
