Rolla Man Killed in Motorcycle Crash After Colliding with Deer

A tragic motorcycle accident in Phelps County claimed the life of 49-year-old Steven MacCash of Rolla, Missouri, on Tuesday night. The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) confirmed the fatal crash occurred around 10:04 p.m. on County Road 7340 when MacCash’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle struck a deer that unexpectedly entered the roadway.

According to the MSHP crash report, the impact of the collision caused MacCash to be thrown from his motorcycle. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene by troopers who responded shortly after the crash. The authorities also noted that MacCash was not wearing a helmet at the time, which may have worsened his injuries.

While the primary cause of the accident was the deer, the absence of a helmet raises safety concerns. MSHP frequently stresses the importance of wearing protective gear while riding, particularly helmets, which can significantly reduce the severity of injuries in motorcycle accidents.

This marks the sixth fatality in the region for October, according to MSHP’s Troop I statistics. With wildlife more active during the fall season, collisions involving animals, especially in rural areas, pose a serious risk to motorists, particularly motorcyclists who have less protection than those in cars.

The loss of MacCash has shaken the local community, reminding both motorcyclists and drivers of the unpredictability of rural roadways. MSHP continues to advise riders to remain vigilant, especially in areas where wildlife crossings are common, and to always wear protective gear to minimize the risks of serious injury in the event of an accident.

As investigations into the crash wrap up, the incident remains a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with motorcycle riding, especially in rural environments where animals frequently cross roads. The Rolla community mourns the loss of MacCash, a reminder of the risks posed by both wildlife and insufficient safety measures.
