Hamilton Police Identify Victim killed in Flamborough Party Shooting as Tobenna Obiaga

HAMILTON, ON—Hamilton police have identified Tobenna Obiaga, a 45-year-old man from the Halton Region, as the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred during a large party in the city’s Flamborough region early Sunday morning. Obiaga was shot while sitting in his car, parked on the shoulder of Highway 6, and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Following the initial shooting, police reported that two more individuals were shot and injured at a gas station across the street. These individuals, both from the Greater Toronto Area, were taken to the hospital and subsequently released. Det. Sgt. Daryl Reid provided these details during a news conference on Tuesday.

At this time, police have not identified any suspects but believe that the perpetrator or perpetrators were driving a dark grey sedan. The vehicle is suspected of having fired multiple shots, first at Obiaga’s car and then at the other vehicle across the street.

The shooting appears to have stemmed from a disturbance at a large house party held at a short-term rental property. Investigators estimate that between 60 and 100 people attended the event. Reid mentioned that an assault at the party escalated, leading to chaos as attendees attempted to leave the area. The shooter seemingly targeted Obiaga’s vehicle specifically, although it remains unclear if he was the intended victim.

In addition to the gunshot victims, a fourth person sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the hospital. These injuries were not caused by gunshots, police confirmed.

The crime scene has been described by Reid as “extremely large,” potentially the largest he has worked on in his career. Police continue to maintain a presence at the site, which includes the short-term rental property and several cars left behind by partygoers.

The investigation is ongoing, with officers planning to conduct thorough searches of the property and the abandoned vehicles. The labor-intensive nature of the investigation underscores the complexity of the incident and the need for meticulous examination of the evidence.

Hamilton police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Tips can be provided by contacting the Hamilton Police Service or anonymously through Crime Stoppers. The community’s cooperation is essential in helping to bring the perpetrator(s) to justice and ensuring the safety of the area.

As the investigation unfolds, updates will be provided by the Hamilton Police Service to keep the public informed of any new developments.
